Hundreds of people sat on the long cascading steps of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple as religious leaders, political figures, and congregants paid tribute to a congregation that has grown and thrived in New Brunswick for 150 years.

NEW BRUNSWICK — The congregation of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, the oldest Jewish congregation in Middlesex County, packed the stone steps of the temple on Livingston Street Sunday afternoon to celebrate their 150th anniversary in the city.

NEW BRUNSWICK — In an atmosphere that was a mix of solemn occasion and joyful family reunion, the congregation of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple celebrated 150 years on Sunday.

Oct. 11, 1859 about two dozen members of the Jewish community in New Brunswick began meeting at Aaron Wolfson's clothing store on Peace Street. It was the fifth Jewish congregation established in New Jersey.
